Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease three 8-inch round pans.
- Whisk together flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
- Cream butter and sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla extract.
- Mix buttermilk with vinegar and red food coloring in a small bowl.
- Add flour mixture and buttermilk mixture alternately to the creamed butter.
- Divide batter between pans and bake for 25–30 minutes.
- Cool cakes for 10 minutes in pans, then remove and cool completely on racks.
- Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Add powdered sugar and vanilla; beat until fluffy.
- Assemble and frost the cake layers. Decorate with red velvet crumbs if desired.
