Graduation season always brings back one of my favorite memories when my cousin graduated and asked me to bring “something fun and fresh” for her backyard party. I didn’t want to go with the usual dips and trays because everyone does that so instead I decided to make individual servings of guacamole in mini jars and surround them with crispy tortilla chips. These mini guacamole and chips jars were the very first things to disappear from the table.

Everyone loved having their own little jar and it made mingling so easy and mess-free that I’ve been making them for every big celebration since. Plus I could prep them the night before and simply assemble everything on the day of the party so everything stayed bright and delicious without the guac turning brown and dull.
Ingredients
- Here’s what I use for this recipe. You can always make substitutions if you prefer!
- Avocados – The creamy base that makes this dip so irresistible and satisfying!
- Red onion – Adds a sharp bite and color contrast to the smooth avocado.
- Roma tomatoes – Provide a juicy texture and slight acidity.
- Jalapeño – Brings just the right level of heat to the guacamole.
- Cilantro – Fresh and herby and gives that classic guac flavor.
- Lime juice – Essential to brighten things up and help prevent browning.
- Salt – Enhances all the natural flavors in the mix.
- Tortilla chips – Crunchy and perfect for scooping and snacking.
Tools You’ll Need
- Mixing bowl – For combining all the fresh ingredients into your guacamole.
- Fork or potato masher – To mash the avocado to your preferred consistency.
- Cutting board and knife – For prepping veggies like onions, tomatoes and jalapeños.
- Citrus juicer – Makes it easier to get every last drop of lime juice.
- Mini mason jars – Ideal for portioning and presenting the guac beautifully.
- Serving tray or platter – Perfect for organizing and displaying the jars with chips.

Instructions
Step 1: Mash the Avocados
I begin by cutting the avocados in half and removing the pits then I scoop the flesh into a large bowl and mash it using a fork. I like mine slightly chunky for texture.
Step 2: Add Flavorful Mix-ins
Next I finely chop the red onion, tomato, jalapeño and cilantro then I stir them into the mashed avocado. The colors really pop here and make it look so fresh.
Step 3: Season and Brighten
I squeeze fresh lime juice all over the mix and add a generous pinch of salt then I stir everything gently to combine and taste to adjust seasoning.
Step 4: Fill the Jars
Now I spoon the guacamole into small mason jars. I try not to pack it down too tightly so it looks light and fluffy in the jars.
Step 5: Add Chips and Serve
Right before serving I arrange tortilla chips around the jars on a big platter. Sometimes I tuck a few chips right into the jar as a fun garnish.

If I’m making this ahead I press a layer of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole before sealing the jars. This keeps them from browning overnight. I’ve also tried mixing in a spoonful of Greek yogurt for a creamy twist or folding in diced mango for a sweet kick—both are amazing for summer parties!
Ways to Serve
I love serving these mini jars at graduation parties because they’re grab-and-go which is perfect for mingling guests. But they’re also great for summer BBQs, tailgates or even kids’ birthday parties where everyone wants their own snack. You can also add a layer of black beans or corn salsa for an extra festive vibe!
