Italian Chicken Pasta became a regular in my kitchen after a summer trip to the countryside where I was served the most vibrant homemade tomato sauce tossed with pasta and fresh herbs. I came home inspired and wanted to recreate something simple yet packed with Italian flavor so I added tender chicken and a few pantry staples and now it’s a weekly favorite.

It’s one of those meals that feels comforting without being heavy and the balance of garlic, tomato, basil, and perfectly cooked chicken hits just the right notes. Italian Chicken Pasta is easy to make, uses fresh ingredients, and brings bold flavor to the table without much fuss.
Ingredients
- Here’s what I use for this recipe. You can always make substitutions if you prefer!
- Chicken breast – Adds protein and pairs beautifully with Italian flavors.
- Fettuccine or linguine – Holds the tomato sauce well and creates a satisfying base.
- Garlic – Brings depth and classic Italian aroma to the sauce.
- Crushed tomatoes – The heart of the sauce, rich and vibrant.
- Olive oil – Helps sear the chicken and cook the aromatics.
- Italian seasoning – A quick way to infuse classic herb flavor.
- Salt and pepper – Enhances every layer of the dish.
- Fresh basil – Adds a fragrant and fresh finish.
- Parmesan cheese – Optional, but adds a savory nutty touch on top.
Tools You’ll Need
- Large skillet – For cooking the chicken and building the sauce.
- Pasta pot – To boil your pasta until perfectly al dente.
- Tongs – To toss and serve the pasta.
- Knife and cutting board – For chopping the chicken and fresh herbs.
- Wooden spoon – To stir and scrape the sauce as it cooks.
- Measuring cups and spoons – Keeps flavor balanced in the sauce.

Instructions
Step 1: Cook the Pasta
I bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the fettuccine until just al dente then I drain it and reserve about 1/2 cup of pasta water to help adjust the sauce later.
Step 2: Sear the Chicken
While the pasta cooks I season chicken breast slices with salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning and then I heat olive oil in a large skillet and cook the chicken until golden brown and cooked through then remove it and set aside.
Step 3: Sauté the Garlic
In the same skillet I add more olive oil if needed and toss in the minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant being careful not to burn it.
Step 4: Build the Sauce
I pour in the crushed tomatoes and bring them to a simmer and then I season with more Italian herbs salt and pepper and let it cook for 6–8 minutes to thicken slightly.
Step 5: Combine the Pasta and Chicken
I return the chicken to the pan and stir it into the sauce then I add the cooked pasta and toss it all together until coated and if it’s too thick I loosen the sauce with a bit of the reserved pasta water.
Step 6: Garnish and Serve
I finish with torn fresh basil and a light sprinkle of Parmesan cheese and serve it warm with extra black pepper on top.

If I want to brighten the flavor even more I sometimes stir in a splash of balsamic vinegar to the sauce. You can add red pepper flakes for heat or swap fettuccine for penne if you like a chunkier texture. Using fire-roasted canned tomatoes adds a lovely smoky depth. For extra richness, a drizzle of olive oil just before serving takes it up a notch.
Ways to Serve
Italian Chicken Pasta is a perfect standalone meal but pairs beautifully with a crisp side salad or roasted vegetables. I like to serve it with crusty bread to mop up the extra sauce. For entertaining, I add a bottle of red wine and a light dessert like fruit sorbet to round out the meal.
